DOHA - Al-Jazeera TV of Qatar said Monday that one of its journalists had been missing since Friday in Syria where this channel is criticized for its excessive coverage of the popular protests in the country.

  •    In a statement the channel said it lost contact with Dorothy Parvez since her arrival in Damascus Friday aboard a flight of Qatar Airways and asked the Syrian authorities to quickly give news about her.
  •    "We are deeply concerned for the safety of Dorothy," said a spokesman for the channel.
  •    "We urge the full cooperation of the Syrian authorities to determine what happened to her at the airport, where she currently is and what is her state of health. We want her returned to Al-Jazeera immediately and safely," he added.
  •    Dorothy Parvez, 39, a US-Canadian-Iranian, has joined Al Jazeera in 2010.
  •    On Saturday, hundreds of people gathered outside the offices of Al Jazeera in Damascus, accused of "lies" and "exaggeration" in its coverage of the anti-regime which had began in mid-March in Syria.
  •    Since the launching of this movement, the coverage of events is tightly controlled in Syria.
  •    Foreign media rely heavily on videos filmed and broadcast by the protesters themselves on sites like YouTube, very few international journalists have been allowed into the country.
  •    Syrian official media regularly accuse satellite channels, especially Al-Jazeera, Al Arabiya, BBC and France 24, of "making" pictures without ascertaining their source.
  •    Three Egyptians, seven Lebanese, three Europeans and an Algerian journalist came mostly without work authorization, are held, according to the organization of human rights Insan.
